Former Buvuma District Woman Member of Parliament, Janephar Egunyu Nantume, has been charged and remanded to Luzira Prison over allegations of operating an illegal animal market in Lungulu Sub-county, Nwoya District. The former legislator was presented before court where formal charges were filed against her in relation to unauthorized livestock trade activities.
Court documents indicate that Nantume is accused of establishing and running a livestock market without obtaining the required approvals from relevant district authorities. Prosecutors argue that the market did not comply with veterinary, environmental, and public health regulations, which are mandatory for such operations. The state maintains that these violations posed potential risks to both livestock safety and the surrounding communities.
The court heard that enforcement agencies had previously issued warnings regarding the illegal operations, but the activities allegedly continued in defiance of regulatory guidelines. This formed part of the basis for her arrest and subsequent prosecution. The prosecution further emphasized that adherence to livestock market standards is critical, especially in districts like Nwoya District, where animal trade significantly contributes to the local economy.
Following her appearance in court, Nantume was remanded to Luzira Prison pending further hearings. The presiding magistrate noted that investigations are still ongoing and that more evidence may be presented as the case progresses. Her legal team is expected to apply for bail at the next court session.
The case has drawn public attention, with many observers closely following developments. Analysts say the proceedings underscore the government’s continued efforts to enforce compliance within the livestock sector, regardless of an individual’s political background. The matter has been adjourned to a later date as the court prepares to hear additional submissions.
