Obed, the boda boda rider captured in a widely circulated viral video allegedly assaulting Rugby Cranes and Black Pirates forward Sydney Gongodyo, has been apprehended by police as investigations into the player’s death gather momentum. His arrest marks a significant breakthrough in a case that has gripped the nation and sparked outrage across Uganda’s sporting fraternity. Authorities say Obed is among eight suspects currently in custody as detectives intensify efforts to establish the full circumstances surrounding the fatal attack.

According to information from Uganda Police, the total number of suspects arrested in connection with Gongodyo’s murder has risen to eight. The individuals in custody have been identified as Ssebagala Noordin, Ayebazibwe Roden, Namukose Juliet, Mondoni Elly, Twinomujuni Herbert, Katsigazi Perigrino, Tayebwa Darlious and Tugume Hannington. Investigators are continuing to piece together evidence and witness accounts as they build a case against the suspects.

The death of Gongodyo has cast a dark shadow over Ugandan rugby, with players, administrators and supporters struggling to come to terms with the loss of one of the country’s respected rugby figures. The Rugby Cranes international and Black Pirates stalwart was widely admired for his commitment, leadership and unwavering dedication to the sport, qualities that earned him immense respect both on and off the field.

As news of the arrests spread, tributes continued to pour in across social media, particularly on X, where teammates, former players and fans remembered Gongodyo as a fierce competitor and humble ambassador of Ugandan rugby. Many expressed hope that the ongoing investigation would deliver justice while celebrating the legacy he leaves behind within the rugby community.

In response to the tragedy, the Uganda Rugby Union postponed the highly anticipated Premiership semi-final clash between Black Pirates and Heathens. The decision was taken as a mark of respect for the fallen player and to allow teammates, opponents and supporters an opportunity to mourn. Rugby officials stressed that the emotional well-being of players and the wider rugby fraternity remains paramount during this difficult period.

While the arrests represent a major step in the investigation, public attention remains firmly fixed on law enforcement agencies as they pursue justice for Gongodyo and his family. With the nation mourning and the rugby community united in grief, many now await the outcome of the police probe, hoping those responsible for the brutal killing will be held fully accountable before the law.
