Former State Minister for Karamoja Affairs Agnes Nandutu has been sentenced to four years in prison by the Anti-Corruption Court after being found guilty of diverting 2,000 iron sheets that were meant for vulnerable communities in the Karamoja sub-region.
According to court findings, the iron sheets were part of a government relief program intended to support disadvantaged households, particularly those affected by poverty and harsh living conditions. Instead, the materials were unlawfully redirected, undermining the intended beneficiaries and sparking public outrage.
In addition to the custodial sentence, the court also barred Nandutu from holding any public office for a period of 10 years after serving her sentence. The ruling is seen as a strong statement in Uganda’s broader fight against corruption and misuse of public resources.
The case is part of a wider crackdown on officials implicated in the mismanagement of government relief items, especially those meant to aid vulnerable communities. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring accountability and restoring public trust in government programs.
