Ugandan rugby has been plunged into mourning following the death of Rugby Cranes and Black Pirates forward Sydney Gongodyo, whose passing has shocked the sporting fraternity and prompted a police murder investigation. Reports indicate that Gongodyo was attacked by unknown assailants in Kampala before succumbing to his injuries, with authorities now working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The tragedy sparked an outpouring of grief across social media platform X, where teammates, supporters and rugby stakeholders paid tribute to the experienced forward. Many described Gongodyo as a committed player whose contribution to both club and country left a lasting mark on Ugandan rugby. Posts shared by fans and sports personalities highlighted his leadership, passion and dedication to the game.

Uganda Rugby Union (URU) responded by postponing the highly anticipated Premiership semifinal between Black Pirates and Heathens, which had been scheduled for Sunday at Kyadondo Rugby Club. The decision was taken as a mark of respect for the fallen player and to allow the rugby community time to mourn one of its own.

In a statement circulated on social media and reported by local sports outlets, URU expressed condolences to Gongodyo’s family, friends and teammates. Rugby officials emphasized that the welfare of players and the emotional wellbeing of the rugby fraternity take precedence during such a difficult period, leading to the suspension of competitive activities linked to the semifinal fixture.

Police investigations remain ongoing, with detectives gathering evidence and witness accounts to determine the motive behind the attack. Authorities have urged anyone with information that could assist the inquiry to come forward as efforts continue to identify those responsible for Gongodyo’s death.

The postponement of the Pirates-Heathens clash underscores the profound impact Gongodyo had on Ugandan rugby. As tributes continue to pour in from across the country and beyond, the focus has shifted from competition to remembrance, with players, fans and administrators united in honoring a man widely regarded as a respected servant of the sport.
