“11 Arrested in Nansana Over Shs 300M SACCO Scam Linked to Wealth Creation Program”

Authorities in Nansana have arrested 11 committee leaders from a local mechanics SACCO over allegations of embezzling more than Shs 300 million. The funds are said to be part of a government-backed wealth creation initiative associated with Yoweri Museveni, aimed at supporting small-scale entrepreneurs and community groups.

According to preliminary reports, the suspects were responsible for managing SACCO operations, including handling member contributions and distributing funds under the program. Investigators believe the money was misappropriated over a period of time, prompting complaints from members who failed to access loans and financial support as expected.

The case took a tragic turn following the death of the SACCO’s secretary, Joseph Kiguli, who reportedly died by suicide days before the arrests. Kiguli is said to have left behind a note claiming he was innocent and had not taken any of the missing funds, but feared being implicated and arrested as investigations intensified.

Officials from State House, alongside the Uganda Police Force, have since taken over the matter, with a full-scale investigation now underway. Authorities say forensic audits and witness statements will play a key role in determining how the funds were handled and identifying those directly responsible.

Residents and SACCO members in the area have expressed frustration and disappointment, noting that the program was intended to uplift their livelihoods. Many say they invested their trust and resources into the SACCO, only to be left in financial uncertainty following the alleged mismanagement.

Police have assured the public that due process will be followed and that anyone found guilty will be held accountable. Meanwhile, leaders have urged SACCO members to remain calm as investigations continue, promising transparency and justice in resolving the matter.
