A tragic incident has unfolded in northeastern South Africa following the disappearance of 59-year-old businessman Gabriel Batista, owner of the Border Country Inn in Komatipoort. Batista went missing after his Ford Ranger was swept away by strong floodwaters while he attempted to cross a submerged bridge over the Komati River, an area known for dangerous conditions during heavy rains.
Search and rescue operations were launched immediately, with local authorities deploying drones, helicopters, and ground teams in an effort to locate him. The search continued intensively for a week, navigating difficult terrain and persistent high water levels that complicated recovery efforts.
In a grim development, authorities eventually tracked and killed a large Nile crocodile measuring approximately 4.5 meters in length and weighing around 500 kilograms. The reptile was suspected to have been involved after evidence suggested possible human remains in its digestive system.
A necropsy conducted at a nearby wildlife facility revealed disturbing findings. Investigators recovered partial human remains, including two arms, sections of a rib cage, and chest tissue. Additionally, a ring believed to belong to Batista was found, along with six pairs of shoes, raising concerns that there may have been other unidentified victims.
DNA testing is currently underway to confirm the identity of the remains. Meanwhile, the discovery has intensified fears about safety in flood-prone regions and the risks posed by wildlife in such conditions, as authorities continue to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
