As Uganda prepares for the 2026–2031 leadership term, the question of effective representation of women remains central to the future of the Women’s Council. Leadership at the national level requires more than a title; it calls for a person who can listen to women at the grassroots, understand their challenges and translate their concerns into meaningful programmes and representation.
With a Masters Degree in Gender and Women studies,Birungi Sharifah brings a background that places emphasis on education, leadership and engagement with issues affecting young people and women. Her academic record includes Makerere University, where a Birungi Sharifah appears in the university’s 2018 graduation records. This provides a foundation from which her leadership journey can be examined, particularly in relation to her capacity to engage with contemporary social and economic challenges facing Ugandan women.
The National Vice Chairperson (Women’s Council) requires someone capable of connecting national leadership with women in communities across Uganda. The position demands accessibility, communication and the ability to listen to different groups of women—from young women and entrepreneurs to mothers, farmers, professionals and women seeking greater opportunities for economic independence.
Another important consideration is the ability to champion practical solutions rather than limiting leadership to rhetoric. Uganda’s women continue to face challenges involving access to economic opportunities, skills, education, markets and meaningful participation in leadership. A candidate for national women’s leadership therefore needs to demonstrate an understanding of these issues and a willingness to make women’s empowerment a continuing priority.
